Before there were personal computers I already had a successful career as illustrator and designer. I worked for magazines (The German Playboy/Penthouse/Pardon,etc...), did book and record covers, besides creating fine art with oil and acrylics. Since the availability of the PC and the incredible software that has been created in barely decades, I have been working mostly with computers -- using Photoshop, Painter, 3DSMax, Combustion, etc... For a while I was deeply and entirely involved in computer-animation for films and games. But lately I rediscovered my love for the combination of different media -- oil, acrylics, computer-design and -prints and now I'm in the process of buying a new airbrush and an oil and acrylic paintset, because 15 years ago I gave it all away. HOW THE PICTURE WAS CREATED
It all started out with the pencil sketch above. Then I built all the objects in 3DMax, textured them and rendered them either as scanline or with the mental ray renderer. To get proper reflections and an ambiente for mental ray I built surrounding buildings in Lo-Poly and Lo-Rez. Then I tweaked the rendered image in Photoshop and at last ran it through Painter to get a brushstroke texture that you can only experience on a large print, or in detail on the magnified picture below.
